With their daughter’s interest in mind, Dr Chang and Jing Wei nurtured a high level academics curriculum and extracurricular activities from elementary through high school. As a college STEM instructor and guidance counsellors, Dr Chang and his wife share their knowledge with the bay area families through classes at De Anza College and private college counselling.

Getting kids engaged at a young age is critical, Dr Chang said. He thinks you can nurture early STEM concepts and skills through daily routines and play and exploration activities. Victoria’s parents instinctively understood the importance of at-home education long before the merits of early education was talked about. She recalls early supplementary lessons, books read aloud, regular library trips, at-home worksheets to give him an early boost in school.

Between Dr Chang’s academic universe and Jing Wei’s educational parenting, the environment at home also instilled a comfort with complex ideas and a confidence in successfully taking math contests right from elementary school. “Because she grew up with a lot of strong academics, one of the best skills she has is not being intimidated,” say his parents.

Dr. Chang has been tutoring and mentoring middle school and high school students in the areas of (1) Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trig, Pre-Calc, AP Calculus AB and BC, AMC 8/10/12; (2) Physics, AP Physics 1 and 2, AP Physics C (Mechanics and E/M), F=ma and USAPhO; (3) Java programming, AP Computer Science A; and (4) Science Fair, Arduino (as instrumentations for science fair), and IoT (Internet of Things).

Victoria has received awards as: (1) Semifinalist, USA Physics Olympiad; (2) Gold Division, USA Computing Olympiad; (3) Qualifier, USA (Junior) Math Olympiad, American Invitational Mathematics Examination; and (4) top awards in Physical Science Category in Regional Science Fairs (Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championship) and Qualifier, California State Science Fair.
